RS Tera – 2 Years Later
Two years ago we had our first close encounter with the RS Tera, when we got the chance to test the boat on Lake Iseo in Italy. It was love at first sight! In fact, a couple of months later Vela Giovane Minusio (SUI) – which until then operated exclusively with Laser – got its first own four RS Tera Sport. This dinghy was chosen upon its competitors Optimist, Open Bic and Laser Bug for its well thought out concept and unmatched quality price ratio. Without surprise ISAF granted the boat International Class status and even recommended it for the ISAF Learn to Sail Training Programme. The choice – matured from our long experience with youth training programmes, and made together with the kids who test-sailed the different boats – has revealed itself as extremely successful, opening our doors to a young and enthusiastic public of kids aged from 8 to 12 years.
After two years of intense activity with the RS Tera, we are still completely satisfied with this product. As already described in our first review, the boat is very practical on shore and funny and performing on the water. Ready in a few minutes – even if rigged by an 8 year old kid – thanks to its rolled sail and the running rigging fixed on the boom, it can be moved around without effort because of its light weight of just 33Kg. Once on the water its performance is surprising; due to its light weight, the wide and aggressive form of the hull and a well cut sail, the RS Tera reaches impressive speeds even in light winds. To optimize its performance we recommend the kicker with a 4:1 reduction of the PRO version, in addition we advise to strain the mainsheet bridle as tight as possible in order to be able to pull the sail completely during reaching legs. The safety of the kids is granted by the high stability of the hull, the smooth and closed cockpit, as well as the padded cover on the boom which avoids painful bumps during maneuvers. We also found some weaker points on the Tera: the cockpit is not completely self-draining as a rest of water always remains on its bottom, also the snap-hook fixing the kicker to the mast could be a little more robust. Beside of those minor critics, we consider the RS Tera to be an excellent product and our personal experience shows that it is the best dinghy available on the market for the activity of sailing schools with younger kids. In addition, its similarity with other youth classes such as the Laser 4.7 and the RS Feva allows smooth class changes once the kids grow up, avoiding longer adaptation periods.
To highlight the success of the RS Tera within our sailing school, we just ordered two more RS Tera to join our fleet! In order to get an even more flexible fleet we ordered both sail options: the SPORT sail in dacron that is already rigged on our existing Teras, as well as the battened high performance PRO sail in mylar for older kids.

Possibile percorrere 1000nm in una settimana tra le isole più belle del Mediterraneo rispettando i criteri per l’ottenimento della qualifica delle miglia per cui inseriti in turni di guardia attivi.

Dopo la pausa invernale siamo sicuri che molti di voi non vedono l’ora di rimettere le chiappe su un Laser! Per questo, durante l’uscita in Laser, vi proponiamo un allenamento completo comprendente alcune regatine per i più competitivi, mentre l’uscita in cabinato sarà dedicata maggiormente al relax!
Per motivi organizzativi vi preghiamo di volervi iscrivere tramite mail (info@velagiovane.ch), indicando il numero di persone che partecipano all’attività e/o alla cena. Inoltre vi chiediamo un modesto contributo di 10 CHF per partecipare al costo della cena. In caso di cattivo tempo l’attività verrà posticipata.
